Corbett bonus probe now focuses on GOP

State Attorney General Tom Corbett’s office is continuing its widening investigation into government corruption, but sources said that no indictments are expected this week.

Corbett’s office has stepped up its probe into Republican caucuses in recent weeks. Last month, he announced the indictment of 12 people associated with the House Democratic caucus on theft, conspiracy and conflict of interest charges.  read more »

Attorney general race already getting rough

Attorney General Tom Corbett has been in the news a lot lately. That’s mostly because of charges he announced two weeks ago against a dozen current and former House Democratic lawmakers and staffers.

But the saga over alleged misuse of taxpayer money, often called “Bonusgate,” isn’t the only battle that Mr. Corbett, a Shaler resident, is waging: He also faces a tough re-election battle this November.

His Democratic challenger, John Morganelli, a pro-gun, pro-life district attorney from Northampton County in Eastern Pennsylvania, is hoping that anti-Republican sentiment, both nationally and in many parts of this state, coupled with his criticism of Mr. Corbett, will propel him to victory.  read more »

Corbett campaign addresses work done by staff

Attorney General Tom Corbett is the guy who had 10 state employees arrested, accusing them of doing campaign work on the public dime.

He’s also a politician seeking re-election, and some of his aides have worn two hats to help him win.

Corbett’s staffers insist they’re doing political work on their own time and their own dime. Reimbursement comes later from his campaign coffers, not from tax dollars.

Spending tax dollars on campaigns — the heart of the Bonusgate case — is illegal.

What Corbett is doing is commonplace, but it’s drawing extra attention because of his Bonusgate role. His campaign spent Monday explaining its process in response to a news account on his staffers’ dual roles.  read more »

Attorney General Corbett announces charges in legislative bonus investigation

As part of an ongoing public corruption investigation, agents from the Attorney General’s Office today filed numerous theft charges, as well as criminal conspiracy and conflict of interest charges, against 12 suspects, including a state representative from Beaver County, a former House Democratic Minority Whip and four current House Democratic staffers. The investigation has uncovered the illegal use of millions of dollars in taxpayers’ funds, resources and state employees for political campaign purposes.  read more »

Morganelli says Corbett fumbled suit

The Democratic candidate for state attorney general, John Morganelli, says that incumbent Tom Corbett has “eviscerated” Pennsylvania’s campaign finance laws by mishandling a federal lawsuit.

The lawsuit, seeking to overturn the state’s ban on corporate campaign contributions, was filed last summer in U.S. District Court by a nonprofit corporation based in Virginia, the Center for Individual Freedom.

In an interview last week, Morganelli said Corbett should have defended the state law and battled the lawsuit in court.  read more »

Boscola Latches on to Corbett Criticisms Over LVC

Federal and state lawmakers weighed in Wednesday on the state attorney general’s decision to settle an investigation of Lehigh Valley College’s parent corporation, with one of the two denouncing it because no money is going to students stuck with huge loan debt.

In a testy exchange before the Senate Appropriations Committee, state Sen. Lisa Boscola, D-Northampton, grilled Attorney General Tom Corbett on the terms of the $200,000 settlement between his office and Illinois-based Career Education Corp.

‘‘If you’ve done something wrong, you pay the price,’‘ the visibly frustrated Bethlehem lawmaker told Corbett, a Republican.

Morganelli: Bonusgate Riddled With Conflicts of Interest

Republican Attorney General Tom Corbett won’t step aside from investigating GOP leaders, despite a political opponent’s accusation that Corbett’s “conflicts of interest” could jeopardize a grand jury investigation into legislative bonuses.

Corbett spokesman Kevin Harley said Wednesday the office is investigating Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate, and “Tom Corbett will follow the evidence wherever it leads.” ...  read more »
