Ridge for VP?

He was on the short list in 2000, but passed over because of opposition from social conservatives. Will 2008 be Tom Ridge’s year? Or is the former Pennsylvania governor destined to be passed over again?

Political insiders close to John McCain said the presumptive Republican presidential nominee would like to pick Ridge — his friend, national co-chairman of his campaign and a fellow Vietnam veteran — to be his vice presidential running mate.

Analysts and party insiders said Ridge would almost certainly guarantee a victory in Pennsylvania, which is viewed as a must-win state for McCain.

Obama Chooses PA Campaign Director

Democrat Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, which as Pennsylvania Avenue notes, continues to be raising more questions than it answers, has apparently finally picked a state director to manage the day-to-day campaign in the state.

Craig Schirmer, a Californian with little if any Pennsylvania experience who was involved in Obama’s South Carolina, Wisconsin and North Carolina primary operations, will run the Pennsylvania campaign.

PA Republicans practicing cooperation

Hopefully democrats will pick up on the need for cooperation throughout all levels of the 2008 elections. It would be nice, but I won’t be holding my breath.
The national Democratic Party will suffer if it focuses too much on the state’s urban cores, while the GOP is coordinating in potential Democratic strongholds like Northeast PA.

The state and national Republican Party will open campaign offices throughout Pennsylvania in July, including one today in Luzerne County.

Pennsylvania Victory, a state organization operating on federal party funds, signed an agreement with congressional candidate Chris Hackett on Wednesday to sublease 936 square feet of the 1,183-square-foot office space.  read more »

McCain Pulls in $1.5 Million at PA Event

Does anyone else find McCain’s comments more than slightly distasteful? He’s very directly telling these rich people “I’m running so you’ll get far richer.”

Sen. John McCain picked up $1.5 million for his campaign and the Republican Party during a cocktail reception Monday night in an air-conditioned tent on the grounds of a Bryn Mawr estate.

The GOP’s nominee-in-waiting also may have discovered a new housing policy.  read more »

Official wants Obama to pay fees for Reading rally

A Reading school board member says he doesn’t think it was legal for the district to waive fees associated with a Barack Obama rally at the high school.

William F. Cinfici says waiving the fees associated with the April rally represents an in-kind donation to the Democrat’s campaign. He says that’s illegal and unfair to taxpayers.  read more »

Clinton Leaves $230K PA Debt in Her Wake

Happily, she doesn’t owe Keystone Politics any money…

Brad Koplinski is a Harrisburg city council member, lawyer, delegate to the Democratic National Convention and is seen as an up-and-comer in local Democratic circles.

Now he can add a new title: Hillary Rodham Clinton creditor.

Koplinksi, who quit his state job to work full time for Clinton’s presidential campaign in Pennsylvania, is one of dozens of individuals, businesses, municipalities, schools and universities in the state owed more than $231,000 by Clinton’s campaign.  read more »

Obama Returns to 'Burgh for Economy Speech

What do you all think of this “unity tour”? Will it make a difference in your vote or were you going to vote Democratic either way?

Barack Obama returns to Pennsylvania Thursday morning for an invitation-only “economic competitiveness summit” on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Obama, the likely Democratic nominee, has been touring the country and trying to show working-class voters he not only gets how they are struggling but also has solutions to make things better.

The next day, Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton will begin their “Unity Tour,” to help repair some of the rifts from the primary and get Clinton backers on board with Obama.

Obama Leads in Swing States, Including PA

I’m surprised to see that Barack Obama is leading in Florida, but not too surprised about Ohio and Pennsylvania. What do you think?

It’s certainly early, but Barack Obama gets some good news this morning out of a new Quinnipiac University series of swing state polls that shows him leading John McCain by a double-digit margin in Pennsylvania and about half as much in Florida and Ohio.

First the overall numbers:

The Pennsylvania poll of 1,511 likely voters showed Obama leading 52-40 percent with a 2.5 percent margin of error.

McCain argues in Phillly: Pennsylvanians aren't bitter

Doesn’t this guy have any fresh content?

Picking up where Barack Obama’s Democratic rival left off, Republican John McCain sought Wednesday to cast the Illinois senator as out of touch with ordinary Americans.

McCain made the claim during his first general election campaign stop in Pennsylvania and promised to return often, reminding state voters again and again of Obama’s remarks about ‘‘bitter’‘ Pennsylvanians.

‘‘We are going to travel all over the state of Pennsylvania, and we are going to go to the small towns in Pennsylvania and I am going to tell them I don’t agree with Sen. Obama that they cling to their religion and the Constitution because they are bitter,’‘ McCain said.  read more »

Rendell to Dems: Get Over Clinton, It's Obama Time

Governor Rendell, one of Clinton’s most vociferous supporters, gave Democrats seven days to get over her loss and start working for Obama. Honestly, I can’t imagine that it will take a week to get used to something that you should have been aware of for at least a month.

At this weekend’s meeting, the New York senator’s most vocal Pennsylvania cheerleader, Gov. Ed Rendell, gave Clinton loyalists until June 14 to lick their wounds and mourn the demise of her candidacy.

‘‘You’ve got seven days,’‘ Rendell said Friday. ‘‘You can use every curse word you know.’‘ he said.  read more »

Election Will Focus on Obama, Not McCain

Obama represents a radical change in direction for the country – of course, his ideas and platform, but also the question of race. Despite the boos we heard, Ed Rendell was right in saying that many Americans still aren’t comfortable voting for a black man.

The presidential election will be about many things. Mostly, it will be about Barack Obama.

Millions of Americans are ready for change. But many aren’t comfortable with the man who’s calling for it, at least not yet.  read more »

Pennsylvania's big Clinton backers get behind Obama

Unity was the buzzword among Democrats yesterday, and no more so than in Pennsylvania, where almost all the big power brokers – and many of the smaller ones – had until now thrown their support behind Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

But with Sen. Barack Obama the presumptive Democratic nominee, top state Democrats yesterday were left figuring out how to best position the Illinois lawmaker for victory in their swing state, which carries 21 electoral votes.

“Any time, any place, anywhere under any set of circumstances that I can be helpful, that’s where I’m going to be,” Mayor Nutter said yesterday. “I’ll campaign with him here in Philly or in the suburbs or anywhere else they would like.”

“I’m a Democrat,” he added. “I’m supporting the Democratic nominee.”  read more »

Uncommitted Delegates Urged to Choose on Tuesday

I thought Jason Altmire had chosen already, honestly, but I guess not. The sooner the better at this point – I’d like to know where PA’s uncommitted delegates stand! My guess is that they’re all leaning toward Obama at this point but not committing out of deference to Clinton.

Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign is urging uncommitted members of Congress to formally endorse the Democratic front-runner as voters in Montana and South Dakota head to the polls so that the Illinois senator can clinch the presidential nomination Tuesday night.  read more »

To End Gerrymandering, Pay Closer Attention!

As Chris Satullo says in this fantastic column, the forces of the status quo are once again looking to kill reform efforts. Read his column:

A bill to curb gerrymandering is in trouble in the Pennsylvania legislature. Gerrymandering is the dark art of drawing electoral districts to stack the deck in favor of incumbents and the party in power. Pennsylvania is the second-most-gerrymandered state in the land.

House Bill 2420 “is a key pillar of fundamental, transformational reform,” says Barry Kauffman of Pennsylvania Common Cause.

So, of course, friends of the status quo are trying to bury this bill in committee.  read more »

McCain Ad Talks of Big Ideas for the Country

John McCain has a new ad running in Pennsylvania focusing on his big ideas for the country, including corporate accountability and healthcare. Oddly, the ad forgot some punctuation both on screen (acceptable in this context) and in narration (unacceptable). Energy is “cleaner cheaper” and taxes are “simpler fairer” under McCain. Don’t forget it.
