PA Republicans practicing cooperation

Hopefully democrats will pick up on the need for cooperation throughout all levels of the 2008 elections. It would be nice, but I won’t be holding my breath.
The national Democratic Party will suffer if it focuses too much on the state’s urban cores, while the GOP is coordinating in potential Democratic strongholds like Northeast PA.

The state and national Republican Party will open campaign offices throughout Pennsylvania in July, including one today in Luzerne County.

Pennsylvania Victory, a state organization operating on federal party funds, signed an agreement with congressional candidate Chris Hackett on Wednesday to sublease 936 square feet of the 1,183-square-foot office space.  read more »

Chris Carney comes out for Clinton

U.S. Rep. Chris Carney ended months of mulling it over and announced Thursday he’s backing New York Sen. Hillary Clinton for president.

In a statement, Mr. Carney said he met with Mrs. Clinton on Wednesday, “and let her know Thursday that I am supporting her.”

“I have watched this primary process very closely, and as I said I would do, I have weighed the temperament and leadership displayed by Sens. Clinton and Obama during the course of this campaign,” Mr. Carney said in a statement. “We are extremely fortunate to have two very strong candidates vying to lead our nation. Pennsylvania’s 10th (Congressional) District (voters) overwhelmingly chose Sen. Clinton in the Pennsylvania primary and I will respect their decision.”  read more »

Stuck in the Middle with You: Altmire's a Centrist

Rep. Jason Altmire, D-Pa., said that the moderate vote-ratings scores for him and other freshmen prove that “we could, for the first time, field candidates who could be competitive in these [Republican] districts. These results show where I want to be: working the middle with both sides.” By contrast, Altmire said, he defeated his predecessor, GOP Rep. Melissa Hart, in his suburban Pittsburgh district because “she had moved too far from the center; once her constituents found that out, they kicked her out.” Hart is seeking to regain the seat this year.  read more »

Carney Loads Up for Expensive Race in PA-10

Roll Call, Washington D.C.

“...He’s a Carney. Vincent Rongione is back for another run with Rep. Christopher Carney (D-Pa.). Rongione, who served as the Carney campaign’s finance director in 2006, has been hired as the freshman Congressman’s campaign manager.”

Meuser Doesn't Even Live in Carney's District

A less than auspicious start, eh Dan? Though to be fair to Meuser, it sounds an awful lot like Joe Whats-his-name Driscoll “moving” to Allentown to run against Charlie Dent in 2004.

Dan Meuser, a Republican candidate for the 10th Congressional District seat, has filed nomination petitions that show he continues to live outside the district.

But in a statement, Meuser, who lives in Shavertown, Jackson Township, Luzerne County, said his fulfillment of plans to move into the district to a home in Harveys Lake is only being held up temporarily by renovations to the new home. Jackson Township is in the 11th Congressional District.  read more »

Businessman Dan Meuser, one of the two leading Republicans seeking to unseat Rep. Christopher Carney (D), announced late last week that he raised more than $400,000 in individual donations in the final three months of 2007. In a memo (why didn’t I get it?) to his supporters, Meuser also announced that he loaned his campaign an additional $250,000 and finished the year with $400,000 in cash on hand.

Businessman Chris Hackett® ended December with about $386,800 in cash on hand, according to his spokesman Mark Harris, who declined to give any more figures. Both Republicans are wealthy and willing to fund their bids.  read more »
