City Council is expected to pass a series of nine gun-control measures today – including one that failed in the state House of Representatives this week – that could set up a showdown between Mayor Nutter and the state.City Council’s package is similar to one introduced last year, but which expired without the state-legislation required to enact it. Without any hope of approval from the legislature, Council members Darrell L. Clarke and Donna Reed Miller introduced new bills this year that do not require state approval.
Mayor Nutter has promised to sign the bills and enforce the law, even if it’s contrary to Supreme Court rulings prohibiting the city from creating its own gun laws. Such an action would invariably result in a legal challenge, observers say.
The bills include one to require the reporting of lost or stolen firearms, meant as a tool to prevent straw buyers from purchasing guns, selling them illegally, then claiming they were lost or stolen when questioned by police. An identical measure failed a state House vote on Tuesday.
Another measure would limit purchases of handguns to one a month. All bills are up for final passage today.

It's about time!
It’s about time someone challenges the gun culture in this gun-crazed state! In the end, the gun lobby will get its way, but at least someone is brave enough to stand up to the gun advocates
“Gun-crazed state”?
“Gun-crazed state”?
That’s worse than absurd.
But, the only way that many on the left can feed their own sense of self-worth is to invent and magnify problems.
Odd that those worrying about death don’t seem to care when it’s caused by abortion or malaria. But, selective outrage is ever the hallmark of the left. Helps ‘em pass fer intellecshual.
Where to begin
First, please tell me intellectual was intentionally misspelled. Speaking of inventing problems, I wasn’t aware death from malaria was a major problem in PA. Then of course the abortion rap. Why is it that those people who self-rightously defend the right to life are so unconcerned when life is taken away with a gun.
Why am I wasting my time posting a reply to this inane commentary.
Excellent rebutal
I loved your rebuttal especially “Why is it that people who self-rightously defend the right to life are so unconcernwed when life is taken away with a gun”.
One and a half million
One and a half million unborn children are killed by abortionists every year.
About 550 children are killed in gun accidents each year.
Only a liberal mind could look at those numbers and see parity.
Ann Coulter says liberals are crazy. I don’t know about that, but it is crazy to think that 1,500,000 = 560
Too Bad
I was almost intrigued by your reply until you implied you’ve listened to anything Ann Coulter has said. It’s crazy to think Ann Coulter = anything that matters. By the way, what if one of those “about 550” children were one of yours.
The number is irrelevant.
The number is irrelevant. It would be a shame if even one child was killed with a gun. But then again, it would also be a shame if that same child were killed by a reckless driver.
The point here is to not blame any inanimate objects for the cause of anything. We as people are the sole responsible parties to all events.
It is however unfortunate that the so called “liberals” don’t understand this, and want feel good legislation enacted and more govt. regulation and control.
Go into the worst parts of Philadelphia and honestly tell me that “guns” are the cause of what you see, rather than a pervasive thug culture that is praised, rather than a lack of positive role models, good responsible parents, a failed education system, a failed war on drugs, a lack of personal responsiblity and a blame everything on something else mentality.
Yes, it’s a shame when the “children” get killed, but don’t let your sympathy obscure the cold truth. Most of the “children” in Philadelphia are already involved in the criminal lifestyle. It is criminals shooting each other over territory, drug distribution, and street cred. And when the children are too young to decide anything, that is the biggest shame, but more likely than not, their older siblings or even their parents are the ones responsible for placing their children in that environment to begin with.
