In a change of pace from the last article, here’s a classic instance of bureaucracy over business.
The state House is taking a step toward trying to deal with a looming leap in electricity bills in the coming years. The chamber voted Tuesday 152-45 to require utilities to develop plans to cut electricity use and install ‘‘smart meters’‘ in all homes and businesses within a decade.

“Gets Dumb” is more
“Gets Dumb” is more like it. It would be better to just generate more electricity with a half-dozen nuclear plants and reduce everyone’s power bills than to make more micro-management and higher costs.
If only our legislators liked us enough to help us actually solve a problem, rather than tinkering around the edges and making things worse and worse.
But, that’s what they do best. Might be all they’re allowed to do.
Or is is about enabling utilities to get more efficient?
I think this actually puts more control in the hands of the resident or business owner. I would love to be able to optimize my consumption to make my bill lower. It would be even cooler if I could compare my business or home with others that are roughly similar to mine.
Nuclear power is not the
Nuclear power is not the demon it once was. Plant designs are much more efficient with a tremendous effort towards the big safety concern. And safety is a big concern, but at some point we need to move away from yesterday’s power generating plants and designs and move into the future. The more nuclear power we use the safer and more efficient the designs become. Electrical power is very much like oil and gas…if we don’t diversify and open up other sources it will become a ball and chain we all must drag.
