Top Dem calls for Castor to step down

If the man has any respect for the integrity of his office, he steps aside. It removes any questions about his motives in the use of his office. As it is, he’s using the public dime to put his face out to the public.

The head of Montgomery County’s Democratic Party has called for District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr.‘s resignation, accusing him of using his office as a public relations tool for political gain and to ‘‘destroy the reputations of good people.’‘

Democratic Chairman Marcel Groen’s criticism of the county’s top prosecutor, a Republican locked in a bitter campaign for a county commissioner seat, came days after it was revealed Castor’s office was targeting a Democratic county official as part of a far-reaching illegal gaming machine probe.

Castor ‘‘personifies politics at its worst,’‘ Groen said. ‘‘He must resign today.’‘

Marcel Groen

LV,
If you are suggesting that Groen should resign, then I’m with you on that. But if you are suggesting that Castor should step down because of this flap, then you are nuts.

Castor is catching people who are breaking the law, plain and simple. If you don’t want to face the music with possible legal action, then DON’T break the law. To break trhe law, get caught, and cry about political motives of the DA is ridiculous.

grand standing

Castor’s MO is to grand stand and us his office for every possible political advantage he can find. It’s been that way since he was first elected DA. He’s never met a camera he didn’t like.

Catch law breakers, but when you are running for office, let your actions speak for themselves. If he had any integrity he would have sent a deputy who wasn’t up for election to the camera and left it at that. Instead he’s using it for his campaign for commissioner. But then again, the MO of republicans in SE PA is to use county office to put as much self-promotions out to the community right before the election to increase their profile. I suspect I should expect nothing less from Castor.

Grandstanding is what DA's do.

Is Morganelli grandstanding whenever he arrests a non-caucasian person and ties it to immigration?
Is Madeira grandstanding every time he charges someone?
Is Lynn Abraham grandstanding when she is “tough on crime”?
Is Jim Martin grandstanding every time he steps off a bar stool and calls a press conference?

My point is that what you call grandstanding is the job entails, if for no other reason to give people the impression that cops are on their side and maybe scare the criminals.

To imply that Castor should resign because he is doing his job is ridiculous.

thank you

And none of the people you just listed are running for the top office in their county by utilizing the pulpit of their current office to do it. We need fewer grandstanders in our political system, not more. If Castor had any sense, he would realize he didn’t need to grandstand. The press coverage alone would take care of it for him.

But thank you for making me laugh at Morganelli and Martin.

Castor is well-know to like the limelight

Anyone who knows SE Pa politics know Bruce Castor loves being the center of attention.
If there’s a camera in sight, he’s around it. Interestingly, the one high profile case he did back away from – and in a hurry, too – was the one involving Eagles coach Andy Reid’s sons.
That suprised me, but when I thought about it, I guessed Castor might not have wanted to incur the wrath of the many Eagles fans living in MontCo.

Updates?

I can’t speak to this post, but for the KPers in the southeast, what’s happening in the Commissioners races (DelCo, MontCo, and Bucks?) One article says the GOP is holding strong, then another says the Dems are likely to take over. Can I have a few opinions here?

AAJ is a good source of info

AboveAverageJane usually has a lot of good stuff on the Bucks and MontCo commissioner campaigns.

From my own experience living in Philly, MontCo has the best chance of flipping. The last poll I saw, which was sent out by Hoeffel-Damsker, showed Hoeffel leading the field and Damsker 3rd. Even though Damsker is the Dem incumbent, Hoeffel has a bigger following and is better known. I know the biggest fear is that Hoeffel’s strength could knock Damsker out and the commission would remain 2-1 R.

BucksCo will be a little harder nut to crack since it’s been trending Dem at the local level a shorter time than has MontCo. The Dem incumbent commissioner was booted by Dem voters in the primary. I’d say the odds of Dems taking over Bucks are less than 50-50.

Chester County

Chester County has a chance to flip. The incumbent R lost a state senate race, struggled to get through the primary (which is odd b/c the endorsement in Chesco is gold to the GOP) and has been walking a fine line for a few years. The D candidates look good on paper and the party has two recent victories to indicate that slower ticket races are now possible. I put the shot at 50/50. Better than Bucks, not as good as Montco.

ChesCo

Whodda thunk we’d be talking about Chester County being taken over by Dems at the local level just a few short years ago? That is about the last bastion of real GOP strength in the Phila suburban ring.

If Morning Call didn't cover this, nobody would

Has anyone besides me stopped to wonder why a newspaper that is based in Lehigh County is the only one to comprehensively cover what is going on the Montgomery County commissioners’ race? The various papers covering Montco should be ashamed of themselves.
Kudos to the Morning Call for caring.

Mcall reporter hungry for blood

I would say the reason The Morning Call is being diligent in Montco has to do with Scott Krauss. He is an excellent reporter who digs for political scandal. I would venture to guess that if not for Krauss, Glenn Reibman would still be running Northampton County. I think he and Daryl Nerl had a huge impact on Afflerbach’s fall from grace in Allentown.
