Casey's bat has Specter in Mudville

Can softball make Congress a nicer place and maybe help end gridlock?

That’s the pitch, so to speak, according to U.S. Sens. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and Bob Casey, D-Pa., who joined their staffs Tuesday evening for a softball game whose tradition dates to the early ’70s.

“I think it’s a great tradition,” said Specter, whose team, Pennsylmania, donned T-shirts featuring a caricature of the senator battling cancer and chemotherapy treatments and his motto, “Never Give In.”

“It’s symbolic of the cooperation and good cooperation,” he said.

Unfortunately for Specter, Pennsylmania went down in defeat for the second year in a row to Casey’s Scrantonicity team, which won 12-7, including a Casey home run and RBI. Full Article and Source

Let me TELL YOU WHAT YOU WONT READ

So, during warm ups for the grudge match, Sen. Specter was pitching from the NOT SO regulation position on the field, “ about 5 ft in front of the pitching mound” This lead the Casey team to come up with alternative plans. It was said that the Casey Team was warned to Lay down a bunt or step back away from the plate to prevent a line drive off of the dear old Sen. With the fear being of course with such a close proximity to home plate, any ball hit with true speed up the middle could KILL the old Senator. Lucky for Sen. Casey team, just before the 1st pitch was to be thrown out, Sen. Specter allowed one of his staffers to pitch in his place, allowing Sen. Casey team to “Swing Away”

Rather than this mindless

Rather than this mindless grandstanding, they both ought to be pushing for more oil drilling and nuclear reactors.
Be nice if they both agreed to do something that would actually help all of us.
But, this sort of twaddle gets better publicity.

the boys of summer

Washington D.C. in summer can be hot, humid and needs some relief.
And so a traditional “relief” of a softball game between staffs seems pretty innocent to me. There was a time when our Senators and their staffs just stiffed each other and here they are communicating in a All American pass time well beyond the understanding of other countries…..our democracy has strange twists and turns but playing ball is a bedrock of our many small communities across the map. If they can play ball on the field, they will take the ability to the floor of he Senate to get things done. Golfing is such a lonely sport….come join the gang!!!
