After the state Senate gave final approval to a statewide smoking ban yesterday, Pittsburgh’s Bill Godshall stood in the gallery and started clapping.“I am so pleased — I’ve been working on this for 22 years,” said the head of SmokeFree Pennsylvania.
“I knew this would happen sooner or later, but it’s better sooner. This is the most important public health legislation enacted in this state in the last several decades. This is truly historic.”
The Senate vote to enact the smoking ban was 41-9, a turnaround from last week, when it rejected a House-Senate conference committee report by a 31-19 margin.

Hooray
Thankfully this bill has finally passed, and will be signed into law by the Governor. I understand the stance Senate Democrats took last week with their attempt to remove a majority of the exemptions in the bill; however, I’m pleased that they have settled for a realistic, middle-of-the-road piece of legislation.
While I do not wholeheartly embrace this specific bill – it simply does not do enough to protect the public – I understand the diverse nature of this state, and am happy we’ve been able to come up with some sort of compromise that will give customers an expanded option when it comes to choosing a place to eat and/or drink.
What more?
What more should be done to protect the public?
Protect the
Protect the public…............Scandalous!!
I guess miracles do happen!
I am shocked that a bill banning smoking finally got through the General Assembly. There are 50 states in the US. I expected PA to be the 50th state to adopt any smoking ban! While this law needs many changes in order to protect all workers, it is a good beginning.
Shocked
I’m shocked when any bill makes it through the General Assembly. :-)
This is bad law based on
This is bad law based on bad science. While some may find secondhand smoke annoying, it is not, by any stretch, a health hazard.
It’s a minor irritant that actually makes people stronger by building up immune systems that aren’t strong enough in nanny’s too-clean world.
But, it makes the self-righteous happy.
Ridiculous!
This comment is so ridiculous, I won’t waste my time refuting it since you don’t intend to believe scientific evidence.
This is another example of
This is another example of the few in PA that just cannot live with other people. They try so hard to come off as someone that wants no restrictions ( laws ) on any of us, but in reality they want the world the way THEY want it and no other way. It really boils down to “my way or no way”. The constant use of the worn out “nanny” term and the blah blah self-righteous bullsh*t simply takes up space. Just once I would love to read a constructive comment from the “nanny” group…if not constructive, at least one…just once…a comment based on fact and reality.
Well said
I too am tired of the usually ridiculous comments from the “nanny” folks. The “self-righteous” folks that they constantly denigrate are really the sensible folks who don’t just look out for themselves but are also concerned about others’ welfare. Hooray for the “self-righteous” folks who are not intimidated into silence by the often nonsensical “nanny” crowd.
Great Villains and Mobs
I would rather that this bill had not been passed. I object to smoking bans on the grounds that they encroach too much upon the control that one should have over one’s own property. I would have preferred that the General Assembly had devolved the power of regulating smoking to some lower level of government.
Irrespective of whether the evidence supports the intuitively attractive allegations about second hand smoke or not, tobacco has become one of the great villains of our times; even with all of the lobbying might in the world, it probably never had a chance. I don’t think that this was some great offense against liberty, to be so histrionic would do no credit to the ideal, but I sometimes worry that dictating what the public may do and where they may do it will become a more pernicious habit.
Enough Foolishness
The individual who suggested that second hand smoke is merely an annoyance is mistaken. In fact, there are volumes of medical research that document the hazards caused by second hand smoke.
You are entitled to your own opinion, not your own facts.
As an example of this balance, the commentator directly above stated their objection to smoking primarly on the grounds of individual freedom has at least presented a reasonable concern – an opinion regarding the matter.
Again, you are entitled to your own opinion, not your own facts.
OWNED
Thankfully...
they waited until they first solved all the pressing needs of Pennsylvania. Thank God they solved the property tax crisis, funded all our infrastucture needs, fixed that broken public education system, stopped the ‘brain drain’ and totally reformed themsleves.
F’ing CLOWNS.
Do you have any suggestion
Do you have any suggestion on how to improve any of the situations you mention or is once again the same criticism?
I can’t help but think
I can’t help but think that if the property tax issue (its on the minds of all PA residents)were revised to the satisfaction of a majority of PA taxpayers, you would feel it stomped on your God given rights; if all our infrastructure needs were funded with tax dollars (the government can only get money from all of us)you would scream that the “nanny” sector has once again taxed you to death and stomped on your God given rights; if our education system were miraculously fixed (heaven only knows how we do that) you would scream that your God given rights have been stomped on. You have shown all through this thread that you have no suggestions, you have no solutions, you have nothing to offer and yet you can be the most destructive of all that share on this blog.

smoking ban
since there is now a smoking ban in public spaces in Penna has anyone figured out the amount of lost taxes on unpurchased cartons of cigarettes?
At one time it was bandied about that taxes on cigarette purchases would stop people smoking but it really raised new monies. I am so glad that the funding of education wasn’t funded by cigarette taxes. How will the monies be replaced that are raised on each pack, carton and case? Hope someone was thinking ahead in the smoke free zone called the Hill in Harrisburg. And I will be checking the boiler room when I visit to count the number of Senators sharing a smoke with the janitors….shades of high school days!!!!
smoking bananother
another freedom gone.good old usa. what are you going too do when no taxes come in from smokers. you do gooders.
Good ol USA
First, cigarette taxes are only a small part of the state budget. Any loss can easily be made up by increasing another tax-whatever it may be. It will be worth it to have smoke free air.
Second, if the good ol USA ain’t good enough for you, there are plenty of other countries on the globe without smoking bans. Good luck with that.
You must be an a**hole
You must be an a**hole Democrat to say something that stupid.
In my opinion, the most
In my opinion, the most blessed freedom we have is freedom of speech. Take advantage of this freedom and stop the criticism. Take advantage of this freedom and offer something constructive. But before you say get rid of all the taxes, think about what that really means and how dependent YOU really are on so much this state has to offer.
