Electric Bills to Rise 40-60% When Caps Expire

Pennsylvanians could be staring at increases in their home electric bills of 40, 50 or even 60 percent by the time decade-old rate caps expire in the next couple years.

Those are estimates from the state’s utility consumer advocate, Sonny Popowsky, who was asked by Gov. Ed Rendell to project what the bigger bills could look like for more than 4 million residential customers.

This is what Popowsky came up with:

-Allegheny Power: 63 percent increase

-Metropolitan Edison: 54 percent increase

-Peco Energy: 8 percent increase

-Pennsylvania Electric: 50 percent increase

-PPL: 37 percent increase

We could let power

We could let power companies build more nuclear generators, but the environmentalists always want us to have less, rather than more.
“For our own good”.
But, Global Warming seems to be going backwards. Wonder if it’s time to worry about Global Freezing, again.
Nuculear reactors would help keep us warm cheaply.

nice.....

keep it rising like everything else… gw 43 style…. only way to stop it now is essentially to burn the bums outta town and seize control.

Unreal.. only two comments

I am absolutely shocked that there are only two comments on this thread. I guess this issue is as sexy as transportation infrastructure.

I can’t wait to see the number of comments on a similar thread in 2010, when we decide to either extend the rate caps or allow our electric bills soar by letting the caps expire.

Maryland let the caps

Maryland let the caps expire and BG&E is getting unbelievable quarterly profits as Annapolis stands by and smiles. The interesting part of MD’s rate hikes is it started in a Republican admin and continues in a Democratic one. The people were just too passive about the whole thing and let their representatives handle it without any threat to losing their office seats. Harrisburg needs to be made well aware that it will be emptied if the caps are lifted. PA citizens cannot afford to have another essential priced beyond any reasonable limit simply because it can be. And when it comes to power producers, competition does equate to lower prices. It has never happened before and it will not happen now. Look at our southern neighbors and you will see what is going to happen.

No Relief

We are not going to do anything. Energy costs will continue to rise and we will pay whatever the price, or do without. Gasoline prices continue to rise and we are forced to pay that price. We can choose to use less and save where we can, but higher prices are here to stay. The days of “what the market will bare” are gone. The so-called invisible hand is now controlled by the corporate puppeteers. Forget about turning to our elected officials for help. These people only run for these offices as a matter of self-preservation. Increasing costs of living are of no consequence to them. They have the ability to give themselves pay raises. Sorry to offer nothing but doom and gloom, but this is the reality we face.

We could drill more oil

We could drill more oil wells and build nuclear reactors, but no politician ever wants a problem solved if it can be milked.
France gets 80% of its power from nuclear. We could, too, along with having lower power bills, if elected officials would stop taking campaign contributions/bribes from existing power suppliers here and abroad.
Environmentalists aren’t helping, but as more of us see that they’re either morons or hired guns of the status quo profiteers, fewer take them seriously.

And the poor suffer the most

By and large, people at the lower end of the economic spectrum are hurt the most by rises in essentials, such as fuel, because they have far less discretionary income. We might have to miss a night out at a restaurant; they have to decide how to buy their daughter a new pair of shoes for school.

Watch for that sector of the population to demand more help from Government and to become an increased drain on social service and religious charities. Also, watch for crime to rise even further….

We are now seeing the immense downside of the GOP deregulation scam which started with Reagan and has been part of their platform for years. What it became, in essence, was a way to funnel money to their wealthy friends and supporters, while dressing it up in the language of the “free market,” all of which was absolute hogwash.

And drilling for more oil? Interesting question. The free market GOP system is likely to blame for them NOT drilling more. After all, what’s in it for them to bolster the supply and drive prices down? None. However, it remains to be seen as to whether there is really that much more oil “out there,” particularly in situations in which it is easily extractable (read: cheap)

The entire situation is so immense and out of control that is boggles the mind.

Keep in mind; we’re a nation of some 300 million souls…and our “energy policy” was essentially formulated in Dick Cheney’s office with a bunch of his corporate pals and ZERO transparency.
