Bonusgate: Fired Staffer Sues House Dem Leaders

The Capitol bonus investigation has entered a new arena, with a former state House Democratic caucus staffer filing a wrongful-termination suit.

In the suit filed in Commonwealth Court this week, Stephen Keefer contends he was fired solely so unidentified state House members could “divert attention” of investigators probing House operations away from themselves.

Keefer, 37, of Fredericksburg, is one of seven top staffers who were fired or asked to resign by House Majority Leader H. William DeWeese, D-Greene, in November. The shakeup occurred after a review of subpoenaed e-mails and other evidence turned over to the state attorney general’s office.

Why is he suing for his leave time? I thought everyone got their unused vacation and sick when they quit or are fired. This makes no sense.

What the hell is DeWeese thinking he will accomplish by doing this? I’d want this chucklehead to go away, not keep giving him reasons to pop up in the press and remind the public that Bonusgate is still largely a HOUSE DEMOCRAT problem. During an election year too!!!

Come to think of it, didn’t this guy already beat DeWeese’s attorneys in a hearing, thus clearing his way to get UC? If this guy won there, it must mean that these damning emails DeWeese keeps harping about did not constitute any sort of misconduct worthy of firing.

Okay, now I am just confused. Aren’t these emails slam dunks? Why would the UC people not deem them as appropriate reasons for a firing?

DeWeese either better get new people he can listen to or just resign now. I can’t wait to have Corbett make some kind of sense of this mess.

In the meantime, I really need to stop following this soap opera.

DeWeese doesn’t care at this point; with the last close match up he had against Greg Hopkins… he is going to be out of a job soon. When you factor in this bonus gate mess, Hopkins will repeat what Toprani accomplished in the DA election.

DeWeese - Crooked or Incompotent

As I see it, there are two options:

1. DeWeese knew about and directed bonusgate on the Democratic side. If so he should be removed from office (And sent to one of the “facilities” in his district) for betraying the public’s trust.

2. DeWeese truly knew nothing about bonusgate. In this case, he has no control over what those whom he manages do. If so, how can we trust him with a $20 + billion budget? Therefore, he should be removed from office for gross incompetence. Remember the old saying “the buck stops here”

Hopkins should hammer him with this. “Which is it Bill DeWeese – Crooked or Incompotent”

Hopkins lives in California Not Pennsylvania?

Hopkins fulltime job is in California not Pennsylvania. he maintains a residence here but has no clue what is going on in the District, County, or State?

Answering Greg Hopkins California Residence?

A Citizen can have many residences such as Bobby Kennedy had before he ran for senator of New York. Yet, that same citizen must declare only one Domcile.

The Domcile is where he pays taxes, has a drivers license, votes, and declares that is primary residence even if he has job and another residence in another state.

Greg Hopkins is model and Assistant Arena Football Coach living in Los Angles, California. He is from Greene County but has not been there except a few weeks every year to see his family.

Greg Hopkins is being put up by the Republican Party and funded by many Republicans from Philadelphia and Montgomery county to elimanate the last bastion of Western Pennsylvania Leadership in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Hopkins will return in August and then run for four months against DeWeese and that is more dishonest from a public judgment point of view but still legal under Pennsylvania Election Laws!

DeWeese Honest Not Crooked Or Incompotent

It takes guts and guile to hire an Attorney to investigate your own office and turn over any information to the Attorney General.

If he was crooked as you suggest why do anything? He was just as upset as teh public when he read some of those Emails. If he was in on it he could not fire anyone without it coming back on him. Give me a break!

If he was incomptent than why even hire anyone to investigate to find out the truth. George Washington had Benedict Arnold on his Staff of Generals that betrayed him, his troops and people fighting a revolution. Is Geroge Washinton Incompotent for Benedict Arnolds actions?

An Honest man when he suspects or find wrong doing hires an Attorney or Former Prosecutor and lets the chips fall where they were found.

I am not Bill DeWeese and I wrote the response you could not refute, so you chose unbridled criticism of a cynic without a substantive response.

This America and anyone can write anything most of the time, but it takes real guts to be able to respond with facts and you sir did not do it?

It was Bill DeWeese that turned over the Emails to the Attorney General and fired long time staffers because he discovered what they were doing without his approval or knowledge.

Bill DeWeese may not be perfect but he acted in an honest and forthright manner, and if you can refute it, do it! If not, why are you writing here something you cannot convey in the same honest manner?

During Veon’s failed re-election campaign, DeWeese and dozens of other repesentatives sent staffers to Beaver County to work on Mike’s campaign. They came from Bill’s office, Kirkland’s office, Evans’s office, everywhere. Everyone knew and all were paid and none were happy about being in Beaver County for the week. As a matter of fact, most were mean and mad.

They seemed to know that Mike’s campaign was doomed, but they were forced to be here anyway.

Your myopic views are incomptenet

The way I see it you misspelled Incompetent so I guess you are Incompetent or do you find that unfair somehow? Just kidding (It Is A Small Error After All), but we all make mistakes and sometimes on the people we hire to do a honest job.

Moreover, there are seldom only two options in life on anything but more often three options if you actually think about it more seriously:

1. If DeWeese knew about it and directed it as you claim, then it is up to the Attorney General to indict him and be given a fair trial by his peers. If this happens then your first option is correct, but if it does not, then you are in error again.

2. If you or the Attorney General cannot determine if DeWeese truly knew nothing about bonus gate and is guilty of gross incompetence, then one better investigate the same thing happen in Republican House, Republican Senate and Democratic Senate. Or that would be unfair or another error would it not?

3. If DeWeese is the one that turned over the Emails that prove he did not know what others were doing and fired those that violated his trust and Campaign Laws on State Time, he should be commended for being honest, forthright, and proves he has integrity and re-elected!
After all he did something to correct the problems he discovered when he discovered them, did he not?

If anything Hopkins should be hammered on, why he wants a job in the Pennsylvania Legislature while working and living in California?

Does Hopkins really know and care about the people in Pennsylvania and is this an Honest Candidate?

Is it unfair to ask tis question about Hopkins?

Smack me. I think I am starting to feel sorry for DeWeese. If he loses to Hopkins, what exactly is he qualified to do? Veon was always the smart one, so lobbying seemed like it would always be a fall back for him.

I’m at a loss. What can DeWeese do? Guessing by his limp leadership style, he couldn’t have been a stellar marine. Lobbying takes strategy, that’s out. Law? I don’t think he’s a lawyer, though, if he was, it would explain his Bush-like bunker mentality. College prof? The bow tie collection would fit right in.

Liberal academia it is. He better raise the amount of quid higher education gets in the budget to grease the wheels while the greasing is good.

Oh Lord! I can see it now, DeWeese will make his TAs do all the leg work. It’ll be like having staffers again.

What can Hopkins do?

DeWeese can give up his 33 experiences and leadership in the House, go to California, and be an Arena Football Coach and comeback once a year for two weeks and run for another office in Pennsylvania…...like Greg Hopkins is doing now!!!!

The better question is what can Greg Hopkins do with no experience in the legislature??????

Here’s what I don’t

Here’s what I don’t get. From my understanding (and personal experience) we live in a state where we are able to be hired and fired “at will.” Employers don’t need a reason to fire you at all.

So how does this sync with Keefer’s contention of “wrongful termination?” Am I wrong on the law or is there something else at play here? Is he suing just to keep the story in the news? Is someone else funding his suit?

Was he an "at will" employee?

I think part of it is state-determined, Pilt, but there are folks who are not “at-will” employees. Whether or not employers need a reason to fire you is determined by your contract with that employer.

Regardless, people sue anyway. Usually they lose, I think.

Leave time and character assassination

The story made it sound like he was not being given his payment for his unused vacation and sick time. I think he is suing for that chunk of change. Also, if I am following this correctly, DeWeese tried to stop Keefer and some other person from collecting unemployment by appealing the Labor and Industry decision to grant them UC.

So yes, you can be fired if you are at will, but you can’t be denied unemployment compensation unless you were fired for misconduct. Since Keefer won the appeal made by DeWeese’s lawyers, we have to assume that the initial reason that DeWeese used to fire them was bogus too or the UC folks would have denied Keefer the appeal victory.

Basically, there is some merit to the lawsuit by Keefer because DeWeese’s reasoning for his firing appears to be a matter of scapegoating and covering DeWeese’s butt. More importantly, DeWeese is making it look like people did bad things and ruining reputations (think future employment here), when the evidence DeWeese himself is providing is not convincing people at Labor and Industry during these UC decisions.

Then again, I could be wrong, newspapers aren’t always the best source of information. Ask John McCain.

Breach of contract

Does anyone know where I can find information regarding filing a lawsuit against my House “representative” for the following, which I claim he is (extremely) guilty of:
Breach of contract
Dereliction of duty

Yes, it is called an election.

Every 2, 4, or 6 years you have the right to vote for or vote against any candidate for office or any office holder.

If you do not vote then consider suing yourself for Breach of Contract and Dereliction of Duty, as a Citizen.

DeWeese Did The Right Thing!

He hired an Attorney to investigate what happen versus what he was told. DeWeese then moved on what was found in the investigation and took action. Action that does reflect on his office but still was the right thing to do.

We the public never give enough credit to Elected Lawmakers that not just admit a mistake when they find it but take action to resolve it. Everyday some employee, staffer, and even partner and friend often let down their employer or betray their trusts.

DeWeese took action and turned all information the Outside Counsel found and gave it to the Attorney General. This is the proper thing to do and deserves recognition and respect. The Attoney General will get to the real truth because of such actions on the part of DeWeese!

I commend such actions on the part of DeWesse, it is not easy to clean up a mess by people you trustsed, and no matter what he does it hurts him either way, yet he did it anyway.

Tax payer funded defense team

DeWeese’s third party defense team took all of the information, eliminated anything that had to do with DeWeese and turned over all the rest. THAT is NOT doing the right thing… that is OBSTRUCTION.
