Bill Targets Handicap Parking Fraud

A new bill proposed by a (Pittsburgh area) state lawmaker could increase the penalties against drivers who park in handicap spaces.

The measure, introduced by State Rep. Chelsa Wagner, would hike fines for illegal parkers from $100 to $250 and require recertification every five years to make sure a driver is still eligible.

But the most controversial measure would put drivers’ pictures front and center for all the world to see. One concern involves people with no obvious difficulty getting around, but have underlying health issues like heart problems.

The bill awaits a vote in Harrisburg.
