Tom Manion to Announce Candidacy in 8th District

Thomas Manion, a Marine Corps Reserve colonel whose son was killed in Iraq last year, today plans to announce his candidacy for Congress against Rep. Patrick Murphy, the institution’s only Iraq war veteran, according to sources.

A 53-year-old pharmaceutical executive at Johnson & Johnson, Manion has been in discussions with local and national Republican Party leaders for months about the prospect of running for the 8th District Bucks County seat. He is planning a news conference at 2 p.m. today in the kitchen of his Doylestown Township home.

Manion did not return a call for comment Monday. His spokesman, Mike Walsh, said of the planned announcement: ‘‘It’s going to be something about Congress.’‘

Awkward Moment For Manion

Manion and the Republican Party will rejoice everytime the media mentions his son being killed in Iraq. And we know the local media is going to replay this storyline hundreds of times before November. Hell, it started in late 2007 when the Doylestown Intelligencer made the death of Manion’s son the top story of the year.

But not so fast Manion. Iraq and the recent positive media spin it’s been receiving cannot obscure the fact that your announcement couldn’t have come at a more awkward moment. Let’s not forget about your background, and the fact the last 24-hour news cycle has been dominated by pharmaceutical companies, Merck and Schering-Plough engaging in false advertising with the benefits of Zetina and Vytorin. No doubt, a few thousand of those billions pocketed will end up in your campaign coffers.

So exploit your son’s death, spin the surge, and hail the Bush Doctrine. On the homefront, we’re not going to forget who you are, and what you represent.

I am still undecided on who

I am still undecided on who I will vote for in this race, but I do disagree with your comments about Manion. I watched him speak on channels 3 and 6, and while they were only blurbs I felt sincerity and passion in his voice. You only hurt yourself by stating that he is exploiting his son, and Murphy should stay far away from saying anything to that nature. We should only be so lucky to have a canidate that after dealing with a tragic event, still wants to make a positive difference for this country.

He's not exploiting, sir

He isn’t exploiting his son’s death, sir. He just doesn’t want his son’s death to be in vain. He’s probably tired of people like you, Patrick Murphy and every other jerk undermining the war effort that his son believed in and died in. He also wants to see his country win. And by the way, it isn’t spin; the surge is working, and much as you want to deny it because it doesn’t suit your “hate Bush”, hate Republicans” agenda.

Rejoicing in his Son's death??

Surely you are not that stupid to truly believe that Tom Manion rejoices every time the media reminds him of his son’s death in Iraq. But maybe I am giving you far too much credit. Maybe if you opened your ears and listen to what the man has to say you would feel differently, “I do want to end the war in Iraq as soon as possible,” Manion said. Do you really think he wants anyone family to endure the suffering and pain his family has gone through? NO Furthermore if you read or listen to what he has to say he not praising the “Bush Doctrine” but rather General Patreas troop surge because it is working, but unfortunately the left wing media wont report on successes in Iraq because it doesn’t serve their purpose.

With regards to Tom Manion’s background, he spent 30 years of his life serving this country as a Marine, so by all means let talk about that because his opponent will surely remind voters of military service. Yes due to his work ethic Tom Manion has become an executive at large Pharma company. Unfortunately though for you sir, Tom Manion has nothing to do with Merck and Schering-Plough engaging in false advertising. Nor will he be receiving billions of dollars from either of those companies or any Pharma company for his campaign. They have rules and regulations to guard against that, but again I am giving you way too much credit to expect you to know about any of that.

Lastly I we on the home front don’t forget who Tom Manion is or what he stands for, because I truly believe our government needs leaders like Tom Manion who have dedicated the better part of his life to serving our country, who instilled the same values in his only son who gave the ultimate sacrifice while defending your freedoms and who is interested in things like affordable healthcare coverage for everyone and securing our boarders to illegal immigrants and most importantly to bringing an end to the war in Iraq as soon as possible.

Smearing already?

The note suggesting Colonel Tom Manion might be in the pocklet of the phamaceticals is rediculous. Working in the phamacetical industry is what he does for a living and not who he is. Furthermore, the comment about using the death of his son Travis for political gain is beneath contempt. I sincerely hope that it is far from the norm for Murphy supporters. I have known Tom for 30 years and I am certain that his decision to run against Murphy is due to the shame he feels being represented by anyone putting political gain ahead of the truth. The truth is that the tide has clearly changed in Irag because of men like Tom Manion and young men who are willing to die for what they believe. Contrast THAT with populist politicians who fomulate political positions based on political gain. As a retired Marine, I do not want Murphy as the sole veteran voice on capital hill.

Awkward Moment

You Democrats/Liberals just can’t handle the truth, can you? The surge is working and you can’t handle it. Maybe, just maybe, Bush is doing the right thing in Iraq, and perhaps sooner, rather than later, we will have a stable Iraqi government.

Murphy has DONE NOTHING but complain and act like a dumb kid for the past two years and now you want to go after Manion for supporting the war and his son. You better get used to the fact that Murphy’s days in Congress are numbered! In the words of Harry Kallas, “He’s outta of here”!

It is no surprise that a nameless fool would write garbage like this.

You being an idiot

Your are a complete idiot. And you even put it in writing. Unbelievable.

More awkward than Murphy

More awkward than Murphy exploiting his lackluster military career and the deaths of his “fellow comrades” in 82nd Airborn?

Exactly, man. Great point!

Exactly, man. Great point!

true

yeahh

Exploitation

Frankly I haven’t seen either Murphy or Manion exploit anything. They’ve both talked about their experience as veterans, but that seems to be highly relevant given the fact that there’s a war going on.

Murphy, what a joke!

I spoke at the NJ Vietnams Veterans Memorial with Murphy after returning from my 2nd tour in Iraq. All this man could do is speak about himself and what a good job he did. His campaign photos showed combat that he never encountered while he pushed a pen in the green zone. He brandished photos that the hard chargers like Col Manions son had taken during combat ops as his own. While hiding behind a disclaimer stating that he acquired the photos while serving in Iraq. Patrick Murphy is a joke. He sells congress policy on a war he never saw. As an 18 year Vet of the Corps and a Chief Warrant Officer, I support Colonel Manion completely. I hope that I am able to help his

Neither Murphy nor Manion

Neither Murphy nor Manion stand for what those who first settled that soil stood for, nor do they stand for the ideals that created America, on that same soil. Just because you have an Irish surname and military experience doesn’t mean you’re an ideal, let alone fit candidate. If that were the case, a better part of the 8th district would be campaigning for the same seat.
I’ll set my dislike for Murphy aside since this isn’t about him. As for Manion, his military experience, the loss of his son, success at Johnson and Johnson all resound of a high achiever w/ life experience. That doesn’t make him an eligible politician, however.
We need to stop picking candidates on the dynamics of their lives, as this isn’t a noontime soap opera, and instead on their aptitude as statesmen, as this is the most powerful nation in the world, operating on a representational democratic system.

Its not about war

With Manions success at Johnson and Johnson, he proves to be economically sound. And the economy should have to deal with everything with this election. As there is reasonable evidence of a sliding economic depression, people will vote solely upon the economy while placing Iraq on the backburner. Face it, war is not the number one priority in this country. And even as grotesque as that sounds, its the feeling that every voter will have going into the booth. While Manion and Murphy both have military experience, they will have to put their military egos aside and confront with what is affecting American lives the most. Murphy’s corporate business experience is so lacking its ridiculous. Please, the guy voted “yes” on criminilizing OPEC. Last time I checked, OPEC is debating on whether to drop the dollar and pick up the euro. Maybe you’ll get to see oil prices at an all time high. Its not about war anymore and it won’t be until our economy gets back on track. I’ll take my chances with Manion.

tom manion

I wish I lived in Pennsylvania so I could vote for Tom Manion. Heard him on Laura Ingram this morning. Hey Tom if you don’t win, please come to Nevada, we could use Statesmen like you.

Free Money?

I wonder how Tom Manion feels about people recieving free money from charities? Charities that hide the free money under administrative expenses?

Patrick Murphy will be out

Patrick Murphy will be out of office come November.
His votes against fighting terrorism and his pompousness (Did anyone actualyl buy and read his book?) are the end of his political career around here.

Patrick Murphy will be elected again

That $300 a month that the Bush administation is still paying the Iraqi insurgents to not plant roadside bombs or shoot at American troops is the reality of what’s working in Iraq. Who are you trying to kid here. The surge is working… lol. Surge towards what? The only surge that has really worked is the surge of cash to the insurgents and out of the US taxpayer pockets.
