Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta will seek the Republican nomination to the 11th Congressional District seat in hopes of knocking off Democratic U.S. Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski, two sources familiar with his plans said today. Both sources spoke on the condition they not be named. One of the sources said the official announcement would likely come at a rally Thursday, probably in Hazleton, on the eve of the state Republican Party’s weekend meeting in Harrisburg.
The deadline for filing nomination petitions to run for Congress is Feb. 12. At the state GOP’s behest, supporters of the mayor have been carrying out a “Draft Lou Barletta” campaign featuring petition-signing parties this week.

The lesser of two weebils
These two guys are basically weebil wobbles that bob and weave whichever way public opinion tilts. We’re pitting shady Kanjo and his ethical lapses vs. the sky is falling (it’s raining immigrants) Barletta.
Come on. Legal immigrants are good for the economy and areas where they live and work prosper. Illegal immigrants are nine times out of ten good workers too.
I never ask for anyone to agree with me politically, but at least let’s take the pandering and fear mongering out of politics.
Let the man speak for himself.
Can we please wait until Mayor Lou Barletta names himself as a canidate for Congress. As many of you are well aware, an article appeared approximately 2 weeks ago declaring Barletta’s intention of running, which he immediately denied. I centainly hope he makes a run, as the immigration issue could use all the time it can get in the state/national spotlight. But, please lets stop the speculation with unnamed sources, and return to more responsible reporting.

Oh, but JM
Oh, but JM, it’s so much more fun this way!
Plus, if we only let candidates speak for themselves, they’d be the only one’s talking. I, for one, value having a multitude of outside perspectives.
Yes, it is more fun... but to a point.
Remember Greg we’ve had others declaring Lou’s candidacy for months now. Lets finally allow him to speak for himself.
If (a big if, as I am sure you’ve read some of my comments on KP) you are implying that I do not support having perspectives outside that of the candidates on political and/or legislative happenings, you are mistaken.
When it comes to announcing candidacy, I’d rather here if from the horse’s mouth.
JM
Nope, not implying that
Nope, not implying anything against you personally, just saying that I think it’s worth posting about, especially if we’re not the originating source. In this case, I’m just linking to the Citizen Voice, who claim to have confirmed it. At the very least, that offers us space to discuss your point – whether it’s fair/right of the media to be reporting this stuff about Barletta.
But I see your point – we make editorial judgments every day about what stories are worth posting about and which ones aren’t. In this case, maybe we should have held off until Lou’s (non) announcement on Friday?
Oh, I'd bet on his running...
Please, I am sure Barletta’s “people” have polled good and hard and their polling tells them that immigration is too hot of an issue for him to not run.
Strike while the iron is hot and people are bothered.
Dobbs and Hannity

Barletta is scheduled for both Lou Dobbs and Sean Hannity’s respective TV shows tomorrow.

District 11
Just what we need, a gut who rides the “taxpayers backs” in Hazleton for an attempt at personal gratification and fame! Well, let the voters be aware that Louie (if successful) will be in the minority and I’d say a puny one after the 2008 election, he will also be most likely dealing with a Democratic President. So what’s this guy gonna do with No political clout for the 11th. Stick with seniority and someone who will be in a strong majority in Congress. Hell, Louie is probably already planning his next move politically speaking cause you know when an ego gets too big!!!!!!
Because Kanjorski has been so effective?
How much has the district improved since Kanjorski was first elected?
Barletta/Kanjorski
Least you forget the REPUGS controlled the House from 1994 thru 2006 elections and most of those years the Senate also. Plus we have had that fool in the White House the last eight years. So things were done since election 2006, even over REPUGS stonewalling and with bigger majorities, less an “ego driven, one trick pony” Louie, more good will be done by Dems with bigger majorities in Congress and a Dem president. Finally a start on undoing all the damage Bush and his REPUG allies inflicted on the country, our children and grandchildren!
Barletta Platform
Barletta will need more than an illegal immigration platform to get elected. The whole country is dealing with illegal immigration issues, the 11th has bigger problems that Barletta must be prepared to address. I can’t help but feel that Barletta used the illegal immigration issue to springboard his political ambitions. A whole lot of self-promotion, but no real substance.
Barletta Platform
Barletta’s platform is to get as much publicity as possible to propel his big hego to use this as a stepping stone to attempt better things/ higher offices. He’s using the fools who blindly do not see through this sham! Enough Republican “bullcrap” on no new taxes and stopping a stimulus package that would help unemployed etc. and not just the wealthy. Remember the billions upon billions we are wasting in IRAQ! Can these bums who have ruined the country over the past 8-12 years while in control of Congress and the White House fool you again, let’s hope not but there are enough fools out there that will be duped again, only this time the majority will prevail, no more stolen elections!
Accomplishments
Can’t wait to see what vast accomplishments Louie has done for Hazleton the past eight years, they must be huge. Roads, infastructure, recreation, lower taxes, police and fire departments, public saftey, catch basins, attracting new business, downtown revitalization – can go on and on.
Accomplishments may be short since he’s spent so much time on the one issue and his self promotion!
Can’t wait till we see the list of contributors listed.
And Kanjo is the way to go???
I guess that you have no problem forking over your tax dollars so Uncle Paul can keep his nephews rich. Just ask the good people in his home town of Nanticoke how much the “Kanjorski billboard” that takes up a city block has done for them. And you say Barletta spends time on self promotion. The problem with most libs on these blogs is that they would rather label people based upon party than look at them as individuals. Kanjo has spent time gettign rich on everyone elses dime, while his district continues to suffer. The funny thing is, he is so conceded, he doesn’t even try to hide it. Hard working people contribute to his campaign fund, and he turns around and pays for a building that he rents from himself. How about giving Barletta a chance to tell us about his views on the issues, before you decide that he is a one issue candidate. He has ALREADY shown that he strays from the party, when he called out the president on his immigration policy. The Dems want to blab about needing fresh ideas and change on a national level, yet are content to re-elect someone who has been in office for 25 years and is doing nothing. Have any of you listened to Kanjo present his ideas lately? Because I have, and it is scary. The man can’t even put his thoughts together on his own.
If the Democrats are the
If the Democrats are the root cause of all that is bad in this world, simply vote Republican and everything will be fine.
McCain snub
Poor “King Louie I of Hazleton, he can’t get Mccain or for that matter Clinton or Obama to Hazleton to talk about the pressing onslaught of illegals in NE PA, how sad. Keep painting the “brown people” with your wide brush of hate to scare the citizens and raise cash for your campaign. A brief pause in Louie’s constant egomaniac attempt for attention! I’d say Louie, maybe you and the fools who are falling for your bullcrap should build a 10 ft high fence around Hazleton to keep them out since your small problem seems more pressing that all the communities in the Southwest. You are a “two bit” politician who is using this issue for personal gain and as of now fooliong a lot of dumb people with your shallow ideas of bogitory and hate. Shame!!!
