Congressional candidate and Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta proposed more drilling and the greater use of alternative fuels during a Monroe County press conference on Wednesday.“It’s important, especially here in Monroe County, which is dependent on tourism that will affect the economy, and because so many people commute to work from here,” Barletta said.
Barletta, a Republican, is in a race to unseat U.S. Congressman Paul Kanjorski, a Democrat, for Pennsylvania’s 11th District, which includes Monroe County.
He criticized Washington politicians for the current state of affairs and the country’s dependence on foreign oil. “Maybe if the members of congress had to pay for their own gas, rather than having taxpayers foot the bill, they’d work harder to find a solution,” he said.
Barletta’s energy plan calls for increased exploration and drilling, the use of cellulosic ethanol, building more refineries, better use of clean coal, solar and wind technologies. He also said Americans have to work to conserve energy.

Alternative fuels are for
Alternative fuels are for morons. Nuclear is proven. It’s clean, cheap, and works.
Liberals would rather have shortages and rationing, so they tend toward solar and wind power.
Barletta... a liberal?
that has got to be a first
If that tiny little brain
If that tiny little brain of yours can ever get over this “Liberals are the cause of all bad things”, we can have an intelligent conversation about nuclear power. I agree with your point that nukes are a proven source of reliable cheap power (although not the only one), but this Liberal vs Conservative stuff makes me think you really aren’t serious about this discussion.
A Semi-Serious Energy Plan
I’m not sure our anonymous, seemingly-conservative friend (whom I’ll dub the “PhantomCon”) is all that serious about having a rational discussion, about anything frankly. I, on the other hand, usually like to utilize blogging as an avenue for more than just shooting off “conservatives rule” or “liberals suck”, or vice versa, etc. In fairness, I do believe most conservatives rule, but not all liberals suck. Many of my favorite libs make their home right here at KP. Anyway…onto Barletta and energy. In all honesty, I really don’t see anything groundbreaking here, but that’s not a bad thing. Barletta seems to want to take a look at all options, which I’d label as the responsible path. It’s not just oil and coal, or nuclear, or wind or solar – to have a truly dynamic, crunch-proof (making up my own terms now) energy policy, it must be well-rounded. We cannot completely rule traditional sources of energy (i.e., oil, coal, etc.) out, because a) our economy is mostly dependent upon them now and b) our economy cannot transition itself away from them overnight and c) even as “clean” sources play larger and larger roles in our economy, oil is never going to be completely removed from the energy equation. Yes, we are moving toward “clean” energy, and as a conservative and a conservationist, I’m pleased. However, for the present time (and the near future), oil drives our economy, and, to be blunt, we don’t have enough of it. I have a serious question for everyone: if we can extract oil cleanly here at home, why not do it? To me, the benefits of domestic drilling greatly exceed the negatives. With our own resources, we import less (meaning we no longer need to kiss Saudi rings), create jobs, and in utilizing new technologies, do little (if any) harm to our environment. This doesn’t mean we stop the transition toward new alternative energy sources. It simply recognizes the current realities. Ideally, I’d be living in a solar-powered house with an electric car in the garage. Reality? I dropped $60 dollars at the pump today and checked my thermostat every hour over the winter (not because I was cold – I was trying to pre-calculate the bill). Chances are, if we produced more at home, I probably wouldn’t have paid that much for gas this afternoon, although I’d still have done my OCD act with the thermostat (I’m strange like that). Barletta (and those on both sides of the aisle who take a balanced approach) have it right: for the immediate future, government must pursue all options when it comes to energy.
After WWII, liberals in
After WWII, liberals in England kept food rationing in place until the mid 1950s. They just couldn’t bear to give up their jobs.
Today, those who hate their neighbors have made it increasingly difficult to get affordable energy. They want to herd us all onto buses, which are driven by unionized drivers.
There’s plenty of oil, but they won’t let us drill it.
There’s plenty of proof that nuclear is clean, cheap, and proven to work well. That’s why they don’t want us to have it. “Keep ‘em poor and dependent” is the everlasting cry of Babylon.
Perhaps, the only neighbors
Perhaps, the only neighbors they hate are those that spread dillusional comments on blogs like this. You need to get out more and see the real world, not the one you have created in your tiny little conservative brain.
If the current condition of
If the current condition of Hazleton is any indication of Mayor Barletta’s leadership abilities, he faces a swift defeat in November.
Barletta...forgetting something?
I find it interesting that Barletta laments ‘People in Congress who don’t pay for their own gas.’ Hmmmm….Does this mean Lou Barletta has never filled out a reimbursement form as mayor of Hazleton? Because doing so would eviscerate his entire point….Perhaps, Lou Dobbs reimburses him for any expenses he encounters while being mayor? :)
Hey maybe King Louie can
get all his hispanic residents in his poorly run city of Hazleton to run on a tredmill to make energy for sale to insiders as GOPers usually do. Hell, his little brown friends can be put to good use and “one trick pony” Louie the Great fools more stupid people! Barletta is wrong for the 10th, wrong for Northeast PA, wrong for the everyday citizen and JUST WRONG as a Congressman who would be in such a minority in the next Congress he’d be useless and not revelant to helping the people of the 10th. PHONY is the word that comes to my mind everytime I see or hear Barletta!!!!
My goodness. Sounds like
My goodness. Sounds like someone is very, very afraid that Kanjorsky is going to lose.
How could a man who took ten million from taxpayers to give to his family be preferable to Mr. Barletta?
Maybe he is, to someone who’d like a little of that money from Mr. Kanjorski.
My goodness
a “ONE TRICK PONY” in a “ONE RING CIRCUS”!
