This summer Congressman Bill Shuster spent a few weeks traveling the district hawking his “comprehensive energy plan” because “The time for Congress to act is now.”
H.R.6899 is just exactly the “all of the above” kind of bill that Mr. Shuster claimed to have been advocating.
Well, last night, (September 16th 2008) “the time to act” came and went and Bill Shuster voted with big oil. (H.R. 6899 Roll Call vote #599, 16 Sept 2008)
September 16, 2008, Rep. Shuster voted against the Comprehensive American Energy Security & Consumer Protection Act which will:
• Allow drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf and increase domestic oil production in Alaska
• Extend and expand tax incentives for renewable energy, and retain and create hundreds of thousands of American “green collar” jobs
• Repeal tax subsidies for the Big Five oil companies
• Require utility companies to generate 15 percent of electricity from renewable sources — such as wind power, biomass, wave, tidal, geothermal and solar — by 2020
• Provide incentives to lenders and financial institutions to give lower-interest loans to consumers who build, buy or remodel their homes to improve their energy efficiency
Bill Shuster was no doubt among those voices chanting “drill, baby, drill” at the RNC a few weeks ago, when he wasn’t partying with lobbyists. H.R. 6899 allowed for drilling on the outer continental shelf. What could possibly be the problem?
If, as Bill Shuster claims. “The time for Congress to act is now.” how could Bill Shuster vote no?
According to Opensecrets.org, oil and gas interests have given Bill Shuster $54,450
When the time to act came, Bill Shuster acted…badly.
The 9th District needs a Representative that will stand with working families not big oil!!!
