Corbett Compares Same-Sex Marriage to Incest

Mark Scolforo says Tom Corbett walked back his administration’s argument that issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples is like issuing licenses to 12-year-olds, and now says it really is like incest:

Corbett make the remark on a Friday morning news broadcast by WHP-TV in Harrisburg, when asked about a statement his lawyers made in a court filing in August.

The state attorneys at that time compared gay and lesbian couples to children, as neither may legally marry in Pennsylvania.

Corbett, who previously called that statement inappropriate, now says he thinks “a much better analogy would have been brother and sister, don’t you?”

I suppose the argument is that with 12-year-olds you shouldn’t give them a license because you don’t think they can make mature decisions about their lives. In this case, the argument is that we shouldn’t do it because some people feel same-sex marriage should be a taboo, like incest.

The problem continues to be that while Republicans have a very strong case that state law trumps local policies like the Montgomery County marriage licenses, they’re so enthusiastic about defending formal bigotry at the state level they just can’t help but indulge themselves with these wingnutty arguments for legal discrimination where Montgomery County is supposed to be in the wrong because gay marriage is like tween marriage or incest.
