The federal trial of a Lackawanna County commissioner and former commissioner is winding down. I’m so excited for the verdict, I feel like Nancy Grace. But I digress. A.J. Munchak and Robert Cordaro are accused of extorting businesses for payoffs in return for government contracts. Nice work if you can get it.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lorna Graham said Munchak and Cordaro used their positions “to commit a money grab,” shaking down local businesses and using their campaign accounts “as personal piggy banks.”
Cordaro’s defense attorney, Jerry Johnson, said the government’s case was “built on smoke and mirrors.”
Both defendants took the stand in their own defense and denied the charges.
